Scrooge Character Analysis - 1434 Words

Scrooge Scrooge is a very angry, rude, unfriendly character. Scrooge’s cruel actions to most others are unkind, especially when it’s about Christmas. The bitterness drive in Scrooge against Christmas is very strong. Scrooge also hates things such as love, happiness, generosity, and regards them as irrational until such time that a rightful trio of ghosts came to set him right. Charles Dickens paints him as an old businessman, with a ring of frosty white hair on his head, a pointed nose, red eyes, thin eyebrows, and a wiry chin. He’s so cold inside, it makes his lips blue, the tip of his nose strawberry red. The book describes him as hard and sharp as flint, self-contained, and solitary like an oyster. In this stave, the Ghost of Christmas Present appears to Scrooge, and shows him people having a happy Christmas, maybe trying to get Scrooge to like Christmas more. Scrooge hears Tiny Tim’s dad, Scrooge’s clerk, say a toast to Scrooge, and Scrooge sees how very poor his clerk is. When he sees his clerk, he sees a family who is very poor, yet they love each other very, very much, and are a happy family, despite the poverty in their home. Scrooge then asks the Ghost if Tiny Tim will live. The Ghost’s answer is no, he will not live, unless something changes. Otherwise, Tiny Tim will end up dead like Marley. As the Ghost of Christmas Present moves on, he takes Scrooge to a boat way out at sea, and shows him him how happy the sailors are. Before the boat appears, though, the Ghost shows Scrooge a lighthouse, where two men are very happy, just like the sailors on the boat out at sea. When Scrooge sees this, he thinks, â€Å"Wow. These people are happy, even without their families out there with them.† As time wears on, Mr. Ghost moves Scrooge on to his nephew Fred’s house. In the house, Fred is having a laugh with some of his buddies about how Scrooge doesnt believe in Christmas. Furthermore, Fred says he will ask Scrooge to come over for Christmas every year until he dies. Colors of The mountain essays Colors of the Mountain takes you through the journey of a young Chinese boy by the name of Da Chen. He is growing up through one of the hardest time in Chinese history, the Cultural Revolution. The great Chairman Mao was at power, and was determined to rid China of any capitalistic views, and turn them into a true communist empire. The book demonstrates the harsh ruling and cruelty of the Commune Party. Da belongs to a family doomed by his grandfathers history. His grandfather was a landlord, and when Chairman Mao started the Cultural Revolution, he aimed greatly at people who were landlords, or people who were of a landlord family. Da and his family are put through much torture and humiliation throughout the story. His father was sent continuously to work and live at labor camps in which he was not seen or heard of by his family for quite a while. The Commune Party that was set up in Das hometown was cruel and unjust to all landlords and counterrevolutionaries. Das grandfather was sent to work at labor camps where he was often beaten and treated poorly. Even though at school Da recieves high grades his teachers and classmates tortured him. He just did not fit in being the grandson of a landlord. Da went through many tough situations and came a long way from the when he was tortured in school when he was young, until Chairman Maos death in 1976. He even ended up making it to college, which during the Cultural Revolution seemed impossible for someone with Das background. The story took place in a small town called Yellow Stone. It doesnt seem like the poorest of cities, but is no where near the major cities like Beijing and Shanghai at the time. By capturing the readers imagination, they are able to describe what it was like to live in a small town in china during the Cultural Revolution. It was a new idea for me to consider this issue from the angle that dieting is the problem and not the solution. In fact the term that the authors use for this is â€Å"diet backlash† (Tribole and Resch, 1995, p. 2). The authors make the point that serial dieting is not only unsuccessful, it is actually harmful because it teaches the mind and the body to acquire all kinds of bad habits that counteract any good effects of the changes made in calorie intake. So far I was convinced by the argument, but I had a nagging worry that the authors would need to come up with something special to replace the tried and tested means of dieting for those who want to achieve a healthy body weight. Chapter two was an interesting exploration of different personality types which are reflected in eating habits.
